In Japanese, \u003cem\u003eaya\u003c\/em\u003e describes a woven or figured pattern, and that is how the range works: four simple shapes and six natural clay colours that can be mounted, mixed and combined into a pattern of your own.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eFour shapes\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eBorder\u003c\/strong\u003e: a slim 47.5 × 10 mm stick, available as Straight Mount, Basket Weave or Herringbone.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eChevron\u003c\/strong\u003e: a 44 × 20 mm angled piece, available as Straight Mount, Alternative Mount or Y Mount.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eClover\u003c\/strong\u003e: a small four-lobed flower shape, mounted in an even grid.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eHex\u003c\/strong\u003e: a small hexagon, mounted in a honeycomb.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eMounts and mixes\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe same piece reads very differently depending on how it is mounted. Border sticks laid straight give quiet, linear rhythm; in Basket Weave they form a woven check; in Herringbone they zig-zag across the wall. Chevrons can run in rows, alternate direction, or lock together in a three-way Y pattern that reads almost like a tumbling block.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eShapes can also be combined. \u003cstrong\u003eTortoiseshell Mount\u003c\/strong\u003e sets chevrons around a hexagonal centre, and is made in the two colours you choose. The image shows Ochre chevrons around an Umber centre, but any pairing of the six colours is possible. Please tell us your colour choice when you order.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eMounted by hand\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEvery one of these tiny tiles is placed on its sheet by hand, one at a time, as Japanese tiles are. It is a key part of quality control: as each tile goes down, the natural colour variation from the kiln is balanced across the sheet, so no patch is too light or too dark. Balanced sheets make a balanced wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eUsing the images\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur photographs show every shape and mount, and every colour appears across the set, but not every combination is pictured. With nine formats and six colours there are too many to photograph them all. Use the images as a guide and let your imagination do the rest: picture the Herringbone in Chalk, the Hex in Ash, or a Tortoiseshell of Limestone and Sand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eSix colours\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSand is a warm, sandy beige; Ochre a golden, earthy orange; Umber a deep reddish brown; Chalk a soft off-white; Limestone a pale, flecked stone; and Ash a quiet mid grey. Because the tiles are unglazed, the colour runs through the porcelain body. Fine speckling and moderate tonal variation from tile to tile give the surface the look of natural stone and clay.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThe maker\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYamashu Ceramic was founded in 1984 in Kasahara-cho, Tajimi, in Gifu Prefecture, and is known in Japan for 10 mm square mosaic, a format few makers in Japan still produce. Its tiles are made using traditional methods, with a great deal of handwork. Kasahara has been Japan's mosaic tile town since the 1930s, when local maker Yamauchi Itsuzo developed a way to produce porcelain mosaic in quantity and shared his methods freely with other local makers.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eFor select projects\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYamashu Ceramic is a very small maker and Aya is produced in small quantities.
