It is a glazed Japanese porcelain mosaic in two small formats: a slim \u003cstrong\u003eBorder\u003c\/strong\u003e stick and a compact \u003cstrong\u003eHex\u003c\/strong\u003e, with 12 glazes across the range, from quiet whites and ivory to deep indigo, Oribe green and metallic golds and bronzes.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eTwo formats\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cul\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eBorder\u003c\/strong\u003e: 47 × 9.5 × 6 mm sticks on 300 × 300 mm sheets, in 11 colours.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003cli\u003e\n\u003cstrong\u003eHex\u003c\/strong\u003e: 19 × 22 × 5 mm hexagons on 295 × 292 mm sheets, in 10 colours.\u003c\/li\u003e\n\u003c\/ul\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eThe glazes\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIro is based on a range of traditional Japanese glazes made in Kasahara, the home of Japanese mosaic tile. Matt White, Gloss White and Ivory are the quiet end of the range, and Matt Black is soft and dark. Indigo Blue is a deep ruri (lapis) glaze that breaks to brighter blue where it pools, and Oribe Green is the traditional Japanese copper green. Dark Umber is an ame (amber) glaze, glossy brown-black with amber edges. Oxide Red is a tetsu-aka iron red, and Burnt Ochre a warm amber brown. Champagne and Antique Gold are soft creams and golds, and Burnished Bronze is a crystalline tenmoku glaze with a metallic sheen.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOur photographs show a selection of the colours. We do not have every colour in both formats as sheets to photograph, so some colours are shown by description only.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eOn many colours the glaze thins at the edges of each tile to show the warm clay body beneath, outlining every piece. Finishes range from matt to high gloss depending on the colour, and moderate tonal variation from tile to tile is a natural result of the glaze and kiln.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eMounted by hand\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eEvery tile is placed on its sheet by hand, one at a time, as Japanese tiles are. It is a key part of quality control: as each tile goes down, the natural colour variation from the kiln is balanced across the sheet, so no patch is too light or too dark. Balanced sheets make a balanced wall.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003ch3\u003eSpecification\u003c\/h3\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIro is suitable for interior and exterior walls, including wet walls. On floors it is suitable only for wet areas such as showers and spas, and should not be used on any other floor. It is frost-proof. Sheets are paper-faced: the paper is on the front of the tiles and is soaked off after fixing.
