Kenzan Clay Impressions

Kenzan Japanese Ceramic Wall Tiles

Kenzan is a collection of Japanese ceramic wall tiles selected by Mittsu for interiors where surface, glaze and form are central to the design. The collection includes sculptural relief tiles, expressive glaze finishes and architectural wall surfaces made in Japan.

The name Kenzan carries an important cultural reference in Japanese ceramics. It recalls Ogata Kenzan, the Kyoto ceramic artist of the Edo period, whose work helped bring painting, poetry and expressive decoration into ceramic form.

The Kenzan Collection

The Kenzan collection brings together tiles with strong individual character. Each design uses ceramic form differently, from relief and shadow to glaze movement and subtle surface variation.

  • Hishigata — a diamond relief tile with a rhythmic architectural surface.
  • Butterfly — a shaped Japanese ceramic tile with soft sculptural movement.
  • Moon — a rounded ceramic tile with an object-like quality and expressive glaze depth.
  • Kenzan No. 802 — a shallow relief tile where light reveals subtle changes across the surface.
  • Wall Oribe — a green glazed Japanese wall tile referencing the depth and richness of Oribe ceramic traditions.

Inspired by Japanese Ceramic Heritage

Ogata Kenzan was closely connected to Kyoto’s ceramic culture and to the wider Rinpa aesthetic through his brother, Ogata Korin. His work is recognised for bringing painterly decoration, literary references and natural motifs into ceramics, treating clay not only as a functional material, but as an artistic surface.

This spirit remains relevant in contemporary Japanese tile design. The Kenzan collection is not defined by flat printed pattern. It is defined by ceramic relief, kiln-fired glaze, texture, reflection and variation.

Relief, Glaze and Light

Kenzan tiles are especially effective in interiors where the wall surface needs to respond to light. Raised forms create shadow. Gloss and matt areas shift as the viewing angle changes. Glazes show tonal movement rather than mechanical repetition.

This gives the collection a quiet architectural strength. The tiles can be used to create calm repeated surfaces, but their ceramic character prevents the installation from feeling flat or uniform.

Made in Japan for Architectural Interiors

The Kenzan collection is suitable for interior wall applications in hospitality, retail, residential and design-led commercial spaces. These tiles are selected for projects where authenticity, surface depth and material presence are important.
