Maintenance

Maintenance Guide

Mittsu Japanese Tiles are designed as long-lasting architectural surfaces, with glazed finishes formed naturally during firing.

Correct cleaning and maintenance helps preserve the surface quality, glaze depth and material character of the tiles over time.

General cleaning

For regular cleaning, use a soft microfiber cloth, non-abrasive sponge or soft brush with warm water and a mild pH-neutral cleaner.

The glazed surfaces used in Mittsu Japanese Tiles are dense and durable, and do not require specialist treatment. In most cases, standard pH-neutral cleaning is sufficient.

Avoid strong acids or aggressive chemical cleaners, which may damage the glaze or surrounding materials.

Avoid abrasive pads, harsh scrubbers, acidic cleaners, bleach-based cleaners or highly alkaline products unless specifically advised for the surface and installation.

  • Wipe tiles gently with a damp cloth or sponge.
  • Use diluted pH-neutral cleaner for general marks or residue.
  • Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  • Dry with a soft cloth where water marks may be visible.

Grout care

Grout maintenance depends on the grout type, installation area and exposure to moisture.

For routine cleaning, use a soft-bristled brush and mild cleaning solution. Cement-based grouts may benefit from sealing, especially in wet areas.

Follow the grout manufacturer’s guidance for sealing, cleaning products and maintenance frequency.

Stain removal

Most glazed porcelain and ceramic wall tiles can be cleaned with mild soap and warm water. For more difficult marks, always test any cleaner in a discreet area first.

Grease and oil

Use mild dish soap diluted in warm water, then rinse thoroughly to remove residue.

Hard water marks

Use a suitable tile-safe cleaner and test first. Avoid strong acidic products unless the surface and grout are confirmed suitable.

Ink or marker

Use an appropriate alcohol-based cleaner with care. Dab gently rather than rubbing aggressively.

Mould and mildew

Improve ventilation and clean with a suitable tile and grout cleaner. Use bleach-based products only if compatible with the tile surface, grout and surrounding materials.

Preventative maintenance

  • Wipe spills promptly where staining may occur.
  • Avoid abrasive pads or harsh scrubbers.
  • Maintain good ventilation in bathrooms, kitchens and wet areas.
  • Use suitable mats, splash protection or extraction where tiles are exposed to grease, water or heavy use.
  • Inspect grout, edges and junctions periodically for cracking, movement or water ingress.

Surface variation and natural character

Japanese tiles often include natural variation in tone, glaze and surface texture. These qualities are part of the material and should not be treated as staining or surface damage.

Learn more about natural kiln variation on our Batch Variation page.

Where the tiles are used

Mittsu Japanese Tiles are used across residential, retail and hospitality interiors, where surface quality and material character are important to the design.

Professional support

For restoration, deep cleaning, heritage tile care or unusual site conditions, we recommend consulting a professional tile cleaning or restoration specialist.

For product-specific maintenance guidance, contact the Mittsu Japanese Tiles team.

Good maintenance protects the surface, but the character of Japanese tiles comes from the material itself.

This guidance is general. Always consider the specific tile, grout, installation area and cleaning product before use.
