Batch Variation

Batch variation is a natural characteristic of authentic Japanese tiles.

Colour, tone, surface texture and glaze movement may vary between samples, production batches and individual tiles. This is not a defect. It is part of the material character created during firing.

This variation is a direct result of the kiln-fired processes described in Why Japanese Tiles Cost More.

Why variation occurs

Japanese tiles are shaped by clay, glaze, kiln temperature and firing atmosphere.

Even when the same glaze is used, small differences in kiln position, glaze thickness and firing conditions can create subtle changes in colour, texture and surface depth.

This is especially visible in mixed colour or mixed shade sheets, where tonal balance is part of the design.

Samples and production batches

Samples are provided to show the general character, colour direction, texture and finish of a tile.

The final production batch may vary from the sample supplied, particularly where the product has a naturally varied glaze, hand-assembled sheet or mixed tonal range.

For this reason, samples should be understood as a guide to the material rather than an exact guarantee of every tile in a future production batch.

Quality control

Natural variation does not mean uncontrolled production.

Japanese factories maintain rigorous quality control, with tiles inspected by hand and eye before packing.

Where tiles are mounted on sheets, experienced workers arrange tones to create a balanced overall surface rather than a mechanical repeat.

Planning your order

To achieve the best result, we recommend ordering enough material for the full area at the same time.

This helps ensure the project is supplied from the same production batch wherever possible.

We also recommend allowing extra material for cuts, site conditions and future repairs, particularly where the tile has strong natural variation.

Installation and layout

Before installation, tiles should be checked and blended across the area.

Installers should open multiple boxes and review the overall tone, shade and surface distribution before fixing.

This is particularly important for mixed glaze, yohen glaze and highly varied products, where the final appearance depends on balanced distribution across the wall.

Delivery and protection

Japanese tiles are valuable materials and are handled accordingly.

To help protect the tiles during transport, bulk shipments and many box orders are supplied on pallets where appropriate.

This reduces the risk of damage and helps preserve the quality of the material from warehouse to site.
