Frequently Asked Questions

This page answers common questions about Japanese tiles, specification, supply and logistics.

Origin and authenticity

Where are your tiles made?

All tiles supplied by Mittsu are manufactured in Japan.

What makes Japanese tiles different?

Japanese tiles are defined by their material quality, high-temperature firing and naturally developed glaze surfaces.

Rather than printed finishes, colour and texture are formed within the kiln, creating depth and variation that cannot be replicated by mass-produced alternatives.

Why are similar tiles described as “Japanese style” elsewhere?

These are typically manufactured outside Japan. While visually similar, they differ in material composition, firing process and glaze development.

Authentic Japanese tiles are kiln-formed at high temperatures, creating natural variation, durability and depth that cannot be replicated through printed or surface-applied finishes.

Samples and variation

Can I order samples?

Samples are available for most collections and are ordered directly through the website using the sample option on each product page.

View available samples in the Japanese tile samples collection.

Why do tiles vary in colour and tone?

Variation is a natural result of kiln firing. Differences in temperature, glaze thickness and kiln atmosphere create subtle shifts in tone and texture across each tile.

This variation is an inherent characteristic of authentic Japanese tiles and forms part of their architectural quality.

Read more on our Batch Variation page.

Will my order match the sample?

Samples are representative, but each production batch will vary slightly. This is particularly noticeable with mixed colour or shade sheets.

Where consistency is critical, we recommend confirming quantities early so tiles can be supplied from a single batch wherever possible.

Supply and logistics

Where do you ship to?

Our primary markets are Europe and the GCC. We can support projects in other regions depending on scope and logistics.

Where do you ship from?

Stock is held in the UK, Germany, Dubai and Japan.

What about VAT?

VAT treatment depends on the destination and project structure. Further information is available on our VAT page.

What if the tile is not in stock?

Tiles can be supplied from Japan either from stock or as a made-to-order production run.

How long do orders take?

Lead times depend on availability:

Stocked in Japan: approximately 6–14 weeks
Made to order: up to 6 months

Every project is different, so timings should be confirmed at the point of enquiry.

How much does shipping cost?

Shipping is calculated automatically at checkout for standard orders. Larger project shipments are quoted separately.

Is there a minimum order?

There is no standard minimum order, however tiles are supplied in full cartons and cannot be split.

Certain made-to-order collections have minimum order quantities, which are specified on the product page.

Installation and performance

Where can these tiles be used?

Most collections are suitable for interior wall applications, including residential, retail and hospitality environments. Some tiles are also suitable for exterior use depending on specification.

See how they are used in real settings on our Projects page.

Application suitability should always be confirmed at the time of specification.

Do the tiles require specialist installation?

Installation can be carried out by experienced tilers. Guidance is available on our Installation page.

How are the tiles maintained?

Maintenance depends on the surface finish. Most glazed porcelain tiles require only standard cleaning methods.

More guidance is available on our Maintenance page.

How sustainable are Japanese tiles?

Japanese tiles are produced for longevity. In many cases, sea freight transport results in lower overall CO₂ impact compared with shorter-distance road transport within Europe.
