Japanese Tiles in the Home Spa Concept

This conceptual home spa design by Ondrej Slowik explores how Japanese ceramic tiles can shape atmosphere, light and spatial calm through material continuity and restraint.

Published through Reawote, the project combines softly illuminated architectural forms with Japanese porcelain tiles to create interiors that feel immersive, tactile and restorative.

Yuki Border Green

Yuki Border Green is used throughout the darker spa and bathroom spaces, where the elongated concave surfaces introduce subtle movement across the walls. The changing reflections created by the glaze and curved tile profile give the surfaces a sense of depth that shifts depending on viewing angle and lighting conditions.

Within the low-lit interiors, the tiles create an atmosphere that feels calm, enveloping and architectural rather than decorative. The concave form allows light to move softly across the surface, creating alternating highlights and shadow lines that bring rhythm to otherwise minimal spaces.

Kaji Border Oat

Kaji Border Oat is used within the lighter steam and wellness spaces, where the fine linear format and pale glaze create a softer and more restrained expression. Applied continuously across walls, ceilings and seating elements, the tiles reinforce the sculptural geometry of the room while maintaining a quiet visual uniformity.

Material & Surface Character

Both tile collections are produced in Japan using high-temperature kiln firing, resulting in natural variation in gloss, tone and surface character. These subtle irregularities prevent large tiled areas from feeling flat or repetitive, allowing the interiors to retain warmth and material complexity despite their restrained palette.

Unlike printed ceramic surfaces, the variation in these tiles is created during firing, resulting in natural tonal movement rather than repeated pattern.

About Yuki Border

Yuki Border is a Japanese porcelain tile collection characterised by its elongated concave profile, textured glaze and natural tonal variation created during high-temperature kiln firing in Japan. The concave surface allows light to move across the tile, creating shifting highlights and shadow lines that give the installation depth and rhythm.

About Kaji Border

Kaji Border is a Japanese porcelain tile collection characterised by its elongated format, textured glaze and natural tonal variation created during high-temperature kiln firing in Japan. The collection is designed for architectural wall applications where light, rhythm and surface movement are central to the design.

Why Japanese Porcelain Tiles Were Selected

Japanese porcelain tiles are fired at extremely high temperatures, creating a dense ceramic body with very low water absorption and exceptional surface durability. Combined with naturally varied glazes formed during kiln firing, this allows large tiled surfaces to retain depth, movement and material character under changing light conditions.

“This project shows how Japanese ceramic tiles can shape atmosphere as much as architecture,” says Ian Reynolds. “The way light moves across the concave surface of Yuki Border creates a changing environment that feels calm, immersive and highly considered.”

Summary

Although conceptual in nature, Home Spa Concept presents a clear exploration of how Japanese porcelain tiles can define contemporary wellness interiors through proportion, reflection and material depth.
