Japanese ceramic tiles create calm and texture in Mauritius hospitality residence
At LUX Grand Baie in Mauritius, handcrafted Japanese ceramic tiles are used to create a calm and refined bathroom environment within the resort’s pool residences.
Yuki Border tiles in Speckled White are applied across walls and shower enclosures, introducing a subtle vertical texture that enhances the sense of height and light within the space. Each tile features a gently concave surface, which interacts with light in a controlled way, creating soft shadow lines across the installation. This adds depth without increasing visual weight, allowing the material to remain quiet and restrained.
The pale, speckled glaze reflects natural light, contributing to a bright and understated interior. As light shifts throughout the day, the surface reveals gentle variation in tone, giving depth to an otherwise minimal palette.
“Yuki Border is about quiet detail,” says Ian Reynolds. “The concave surface creates a soft interaction with light, while the glaze introduces natural variation. It keeps the surface subtle, but never flat.”
Produced in Japan using traditional kiln-fired methods, each tile carries slight variation in finish and tone. This ensures a consistent yet visually active surface across larger installations, suited to hospitality environments where both durability and refined appearance are essential.
Within this setting, the tiles contribute to a restrained and cohesive material palette, supporting an interior that prioritises light, proportion and tactile quality.
Mittsu Japanese Tiles supplied the tiles for the project, working with the design team to ensure the material aligned with both aesthetic intent and functional requirements.
