Ka-Bu in Kitchen Architecture

Ka-Bu tiles are applied across the full wall surfaces, forming a continuous ceramic backdrop that defines the kitchen through rhythm, proportion and surface control. The vertical format establishes a precise linear cadence, while the matt white finish reflects light softly across the surface.

Rather than acting as a background finish, the tiled surface becomes a primary architectural element, framing the kitchen within a clear and deliberate composition.

Material Contrast

The ceramic surface is set against traditional yakisugi timber wall cladding, creating a measured contrast between two materials that respond differently to light. The charred timber absorbs and softens light, while the ceramic surface remains more defined and controlled.

The matt white ceramic introduces precision and clarity, set against the depth of traditional yakisugi timber wall cladding.

Material & Surface Character

Produced in Japan using high-temperature kiln firing, each Ka-Bu tile carries subtle variation in tone and surface texture. These variations prevent the white surface from appearing flat, allowing light to move gently across the wall.

Unlike printed finishes, the surface character is formed during firing, resulting in a material that retains depth and authenticity at both close range and across larger areas.

Summary

This project demonstrates how contrast can be defined through material rather than colour alone. Through the combination of ceramic and traditional yakisugi timber wall cladding, the kitchen is shaped by clarity, depth and a balance between precision and natural irregularity.
